A top teen model of the late 1970s and romantic lead of 80s and 90s film and television, Phoebe Cates began her film career in teen movies "Paradise" (1982) and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982) with Sean Penn and Jennifer Jason Leigh, and then "Private School" 1983), about a student at an exclusive all-girls private school, is in love with Jim, who attends an academy for boys nearby. Phoebe Cates then started gaining attention in 1984 for two very diverse roles: as Zach Galligan's sweet-hearted girlfriend with a tragic Christmas memory in Joe Dante's "Gremlins" (1984) where a boy inadvertently breaks 3 important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town. The second role was as Lilli, a revengeful actress out to destroy her mother who discarded her at birth, in the overdramatically tacky miniseries, "Lace". Phoebe Cates returned to television for the 1985 follow-up, "Lace II". Phoebe Cates film credits include "Bright Lights, Big City" (1988) with Kiefer Sutherland, as Michael J Fox's estranged wife, "Shag: The Movie" (1988), Dante's antic sequel "Gremlins 2" (1990), and "Drop Dead Fred" (1991), about a young woman who finds her already unstable life rocked by the presence of a rambunctious imaginary friend from childhood. Cates then appeared in "Bodies, Rest & Motion" (1993), with Bridget Fonda, Tim Roth, and Eric Stoltz. The actress then appeared in "Princess Cariboo" (1994), and the dramatic comedy "The Anniversary Party" (2001) with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Phoebe Cates is married to actor Kevin Kline.
