Biography And Filmography:

Kirstie Alley has made a name for herself as both a madcap comic and dramatic actor on television and in movies. First known as the Vulcan Lt. Saavik in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (1982), she worked on a series of poor projects during the 1980's in films like "Champions" (1983), "Blind Date" and "Runaway" (1984) with Tom Selleck, and the young teen comedy "Summer School" (1987). On TV, she played a brutal truck driver in the NBC pilot "Highway Honeys" (1983), a spy in  "Masquerade" (1983) and appeared in television movies such as "Prince of Bel-Air" (1985) and "Infidelity" (1987).

She got a big break playing Gloria Steinem in "A Bunny's Tale" (1985) and in the miniseries "North and South" (1985) starring Patrick Swayze, and its 1986 sequel "North and South, Book II" (1986).

Her big break came as the lead bartender (after Shelley Long dropped out) in the long-running hit NBC sitcom "Cheers" in 1987. She was cast as obsessed go-getter Rebecca Howe, who even with a fascination for bar owner Sam Malone (Ted Danson), tended to become involved with affluent powerful men who could enhance her status in life. Her small screen success led to movie roles as a worried single mom in the hit "Look Who's Talking" (1989) with John Travolta and Bruce Willis, about Mollie, a single mom who's on the lookout for a reliable and normal boyfriend when her son Mikey, seems to have a better idea of which of the men she dates would make a good father figure. She then followed up with the sequels  "Look Who's Talking Too" (1990) and "Look Who's Talking Now" (1993) with David Gallagher, in this one it's the pets who do the talking. The family finds themselves the owners of two dogs that talk.

The actress has certainly made an impressive impact in television and films. She finally won attention as a dramatic actress with her Emmy award winning performance in "David's Mother" (1994), about a unkempt woman raising an autistic son. In addition to appearing on various awards and tribute specials, she has lent her voice to "Peter and the Wolf" (1995), and portrayed another down on her luck mother in "Radiant City" (1996). She made her introduction as executive producer with the drama "Suddenly" (1996), about  fellow paraplegic who try's to help a bitter woman find her life again following an accident.

Her film career has not been as solid as her TV work. While filming "Cheers", she worked in various dull features like "Loverboy" (1989) with Patrick Dempsey, "Madhouse" and "Sibling Rivalry" (1990) about a frustrated thirty something wife who had a one-day-affair with an unknown man, who dies during sex in a hotel room. After "Cheers" aired its last episode in 1993, she came back to features in John Carpenter's remake of "Village of the Damned" (1994) and co-starred with the Olsen twins in the romantic comedy "It Takes Two" (1995). She then was cast in the Western "Nevada", about a town populated only by women, and Woody Allen's "Deconstructing Harry" (1997) with Woody Allen and Robin Williams, about a man suffering from writer's block and eagerly awaiting his writing award, Harry Block remembers events from his past and scenes from his best-selling books as characters, real and fictional, come back to haunt him. 

That same year, she co-starred with Tim Allen as a married couple on the run from the IRS who hide out among the Amish in "For Richer or Poorer". She wrapped that year by returning to television as the star of the NBC smash hit sitcom "Veronica's Closet", about a women named Veronica, who is the best romance expert around. Unfortunately, her expertise only works on others. After leaving her womanizing husband, she must restart her life and jumpstart her image through her company and with the help of its employees. She next appeared playing a devious mother of an beauty queen in the comedy "Drop Dead Gorgeous" (1999) starring Kirsten Dunst, and led big-budget television movies and miniseries including "The Last Don" (1998), the Marilyn Monroe film "Blonde" (2001), "Salem Witch Trials" (2002) and the well done "Profoundly Normal" (2003), opposite Delroy Lindo, about the true-life romance between a mentally challenged couple.

She stayed in the public eye as the pitchwoman in a series of television commercials for the home furnishing company Pier 1 Imports while media attention began to focus on how the earlier sex symbol's once stunning figure had begun to expand - she later revealed she weighed as much as 225 pounds. Always an outspoken actress with a funny sense of humor, she played off the tabloid attention with her weight by agreeing to star in the Showtime series "Fat Actress" (2005 - ), about an actress who struggles to lose weight and restart her Hollywood career. As a result, she also became a spokeswoman for the weight loss system Jenny Craig, and started to shed her excess weight.

She then returned to television moves with the comedy "The Minister of Divine" (2007) about a woman who returns to her small hometown to serve as the church's minister. Based on the British series "The Vicar of Dibley". Another comedy followed with "Write & Wrong" (2008) about a model fast approaching 50 years old, who is considered an over-the-hill has been script writer, along with her old studio friends and agent who have all been replaced by younger models. 

Then it was back to the movie screen in the comedy "Nailed" (2009) with Jake Gyllenhaal, about a small town waitress who gets a nail accidentally lodged in her head causing unpredictable behavior that leads her to Washington, DC, where sparks fly when she meets a clueless young senator who takes up her cause.
