Any standard ftp program should work fine with Primary Network's Apache servers. For this tutorial we recommend using WS FTP LE if you are using a PC, or Fetch if you are using a Macintosh. You can download these programs here or here.

WSFTP LE for the PC

Once you have downloaded WS FTP LE and installed it successfully, you are ready to set up a profile for your web site.

To upload your files:

You will first need to set up a profile in the "Session Properties" window in WS FTP LE . There are four basic fields that need to be filled out in order to connect with your directory.

  1. Profile Name. This just assigns a name to your web sites profile. The name is arbitrary. (hint: putting a"!" before the profile name will cause it to come up at the top of the profiles list next time you open a connection)

  2. Host Name/Address.  Your host name is www.yourdomain.com. Replace yourdomain.com with the name registered for your company (e.g. acme.com)

     

    Host Type. Leave this on Automatic Detect.

  3. User ID. This is the login that was specified on the Web Site Hosting Agreement. Call your Representative if you've misplaced this.

  4. Password. This was also specified on the Web Site Hosting Agreement.

    both User ID and password must be in lower case with no  spaces between the characters.

    Click "apply" and then click "ok"

    At this point you should see the Session Properties window disappear revealing a screen that shows two panes divided by a vertical row of buttons in the middle. The left pane shows files on your local drive, the right pane shows the directory set up for you on Primary Network's server.

    * if you get a connection error, please check your settings carefully making sure that the login and password is in lower case. If you still receive an error, write down the error message and contact Technical Support. You will need to have your User ID and domain name handy so that we can identify your account

     

    Click the green arrow tab on the left pane to navigate through the directories on your hard drive until you find the location of your web site files. Double click the yellow folder icon called public_html in the right pane.

    Now click on the button titled "options" located at the bottom of the WSFTP screen. Click "Save Window Locations".

    To upload, highlight your directories and files by clicking once on each directory and file on the left pane. (hint: to send a batch upload, highlight the top file or directory on the left pane, hold down the "Shift" key on your keyboard, and press the down arrow on your keyboard to highlight directories and files beneath.)

    Now click on the arrow pointing to the right, located on the vertical row of buttons in the middle. Your files should now upload, indicated by the transfer messages on the bottom left of the WSFTP screen.

    Make sure that your home page (main page) is named index.htm or index.html. If it is not named correctly, you can rename it by highlighting the file name and clicking the "Rename" button to the right of the file list on the WSFTP screen.

    You should now be able to view your web site with Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. Type your URL (web site address) in the Address field in your browser and click enter. If it does not come up, you might need to click the "Refresh" or "Reload" button on your web browser.

    Congratulations! Your web site is now accessible to anyone with an internet connection anywhere around the world

Publishing Your Web Site

Primary Network supports web sites developed with Front Page 98 and Front Page 2000 allowing you to publish to the server directly from Front Page and take advantage of Microsoft's Front Page Extensions.

Front Page is a very powerful authoring tool. It is designed to assist a beginner in publishing a simple templated web site, as well as allowing an experienced designer full control over the underlying HTML code. Primary Network can assist you if there is a problem with accessing your website on the server or if you are experiencing a problem publishing your web site.
